Economy

Chest shops, the auction house and player trading

Whether a survival server has a real player economy comes down to one number: the gap between what the server shop pays you and what it charges you. Player shops can only live inside that spread.

Why the spread is everything

Nobody will buy from you above the server's selling price, because they would just buy from the server. Nobody will sell to you below the server's buying price, for the same reason. So every player shop operates between those two figures, and if they are close together there is no room for one. Check the spread on a common item in your first ten minutes: it tells you whether player trading will exist here.

Chest shops

Usually a sign on a chest with a quantity and price. The plugin handles the exchange atomically, which makes it the safest trade on the server. Practical notes: stock things the server shop does not carry, keep prices legible, and put the shop somewhere people already walk past. A perfectly priced shop nobody can find sells nothing.

The auction house

/ah. Better for one-off and high-value items, worse for bulk staples because of the listing fee. The fee is also the server's main money sink, so it will not be removed and you should price with it included. Buying underpriced listings and relisting is a legitimate income route on a busy server and worthless on a quiet one.

What is actually worth selling

  • Things that need infrastructure. Enchanted books, potions, elytra repairs, shulker boxes.
  • Things that need travel. Ancient debris, deep-slate ores, biome-specific materials.
  • Things that need time. Fully grown farms' output in bulk, at a small discount to the server price.

Not worth selling: anything every player already has a double chest of. Cobblestone, dirt, common crops. The server shop is your buyer for those.

Trading safely

Prefer the plugin every time. Where you must trade directly, split the delivery into halves or quarters so nobody can take more than a fraction and leave, and never grant claim trust as part of a trade. Most servers treat player-to-player deals as at your own risk, which makes the structure your only protection.
