Progression

Skills systems on survival servers: mcMMO and the alternatives

A skills system gives ordinary actions permanent progression. Mine ore and your mining level rises, giving passive bonuses and active abilities. It is the most common answer to "my base is done, why am I still here", and mcMMO is the plugin most servers use.

What mcMMO adds

Levels in mining, excavation, woodcutting, herbalism, fishing, taming, archery, swords, axes, unarmed, repair, acrobatics and alchemy. Each gives passive bonuses, usually extra drops, and an active ability triggered by right clicking with the relevant tool, such as Super Breaker for instant mining or Tree Feller for whole-tree chopping.

  • Double drops. The main passive across most skills, scaling with level.
  • Active abilities. On a cooldown, short duration, very strong while active.
  • Party system. Shared experience and party-only chat.
  • Salvage and repair. Getting materials back from gear.

Why servers tune it heavily

Default mcMMO is extremely generous: double drops at high mining levels roughly doubles the ore supply, which feeds straight into the economy. Servers that leave it at defaults tend to have inflated economies. A server that has clearly tuned the drop rates, or capped a skill, is showing you it thinks about its economy.

Custom skill systems

Custom-coded servers often build their own instead, and the differences are usually worth having: skills tied to the server's own content rather than generic actions, milestone rewards rather than pure multipliers, and progression that unlocks abilities rather than just raising numbers. The trade is that a custom tree is unfamiliar, so expect to read a menu rather than rely on mcMMO knowledge.

Playing skills well

  1. Level whatever your income route already uses, passively. Do not grind a skill directly early.
  2. Find out which skill the server's economy actually rewards. Usually mining or herbalism.
  3. Check whether active abilities work in claims and in the resource world, because sometimes they are disabled.
  4. Join a party if the server has them. Shared experience is free.
