Survival crates, keys and server events

Crates and events are what a survival server offers you between build projects. They are also where the pay-to-win question usually lives, so they are worth reading properly.

Where keys come from

  • Voting. Typically one key per vote site per day. Free, repeatable, and the reason servers ask.
  • Playtime and daily login chains. The healthiest source, because it pays for the behaviour the server wants.
  • Keyalls. Staff granting a key to everyone online. Worth being logged in for, and a good sign of an active staff team.
  • In-game money. A key shop, which doubles as a late-game money sink.
  • The store. Real money. The question is only whether the same key exists through the routes above.

The test that matters

Is the crate's top prize obtainable anywhere else? If it is the sole route to something meaningful, keys are mandatory. If it is a faster route to something also earnable, they are optional. That single distinction settles most arguments about whether a survival server is pay-to-win.

Also look for a published drop table with percentages. A server showing you the odds has thought about them.

Events worth turning up for

  • Drop parties. Staff scattering items. Chaotic, free, and a good read on how active the server is.
  • Build competitions. The one event that rewards the thing survival is actually about, and usually the best prizes on the server.
  • Seasonal challenges. Time-limited objectives with their own rewards. The healthiest kind, because the payout is bounded.
  • Boss or mob events. Group content, which most survival servers otherwise lack entirely.

What to ignore

Anything requiring a purchase to enter, and anything whose reward is a temporary multiplier you cannot use because your base is not built yet. Save those.

Our number one at play.talonmc.net runs daily keyalls, giveaways and seasonal events, so the free routes above are the main ones rather than a token gesture.

Considering something else? TalonMC is our #1 play.talonmc.net
