Combat
PvP, keep-inventory and staying alive on survival servers
The first PvP question on a survival server is not how to win a fight, it is whether fights can happen where you are. Three configurations, and they produce completely different servers.
The three configurations
- PvP off. A building server. The only risks are environmental and your own mistakes.
- PvP in zones. Disabled across the map, enabled in named areas, usually with better loot as the incentive to enter. The most common design on moderated survival servers, and the one that lets a builder population and a fighting population share a world.
- PvP everywhere. Including, on many servers, inside claims, because claims protect blocks and not people. Ask specifically about this one.
Keep-inventory changes everything
If deaths cost nothing, exploration is free and PvP is a game. If they cost your inventory, every trip out is a risk assessment and the correct play is carrying less. Find out which before your first long journey, not after.
What actually kills people on survival servers
- Lava while mining, carrying everything. The most common death and the most avoidable: leave valuables at home.
- Falling in the Nether at low health. No respawn anchor, no bed, a long walk back.
- Logging out in the open. On PvP servers, where you log out is where you reappear.
- Trusting a stranger near your chests. Not a death, but it costs more than one.
Combat mechanics worth asking about
Whether the server runs pre-1.9 combat, modern combat, or crystal PvP changes what gear matters. On a crystal server, totems of undying are effectively mandatory and a fight without them is not a fight. On a 1.8-mechanics server, click speed and knockback control dominate and totems are irrelevant. Ask which mechanics, not which versions the server accepts, because those are different questions. See skills systems too, since a combat skill tree changes the numbers further.
The safe default
On a claims-based server with zoned PvP, you can build freely and opt into risk when you want it. That is the
configuration our number one at play.talonmc.net runs, which is why we suggest it
to people who want to build rather than fight.
