Land claims and griefing on survival servers

A claim marks land as yours and stops other players breaking blocks inside it. That is the guarantee. Everything beyond it varies, and the variations are where bases are lost.

How claims are earned

Most commonly claim blocks accumulated per hour played, spendable on area. Some servers grant a fixed allowance, some sell blocks for in-game money, a few sell them for real money. Playtime-based is the healthiest because it rewards the behaviour the server wants.

What a good claim stops

  • Block breaking and placing by untrusted players.
  • Chest, furnace and hopper access.
  • Creeper, enderman and fire damage from outside.
  • Fluid flow across the border. Frequently missing, and a lava channel dug to your boundary is a real and common exploit that is not technically griefing on servers that allow it.

The four leaks

  1. PvP. Claims protect blocks, not you. On many servers someone can walk in and kill you beside your own chests.
  2. Depth. If the claim is not bedrock to sky, tunnelling underneath is legal.
  3. Trust. Adding the wrong person defeats every protection system ever written. This is the most common real cause of base loss on well-protected servers.
  4. Expiry. Most servers release claims after two to eight weeks of inactivity. Sensible policy, and the single most common way returning players lose everything. Ask the number before you build.

If you are griefed anyway

Take screenshots with coordinates visible, note the time as precisely as you can, and open a ticket immediately. Block logging retention is measured in days or weeks on most servers, so damage reported late is often unrecoverable even with willing staff. Do not repair the area before staff look at it; on some logging tools your own repairs obscure the original actions.

Reading "grief protected" on a listing

It is a claim rather than a mechanic. It might mean a full claim plugin, a staff rollback tool, or just a rule against griefing. The version worth having is block logging plus responsive staff, because that restores a base rather than merely punishing someone. Servers that name grief protection in their own server message, which our pings record, are at least advertising the thing you actually care about instead of a player count.

Our number one at play.talonmc.net gives you a personal claim from arrival rather than a plot inside somebody else's town, which sidesteps the town-upkeep failure entirely.
