Progression
Survival server ranks: earned, bought, and the difference
Ranks are the main product of almost every survival server. They bundle perks: more homes,
more claim blocks, access to a kit, cosmetic chat colours, a shorter teleport cooldown, sometimes access to
commands like /feed or /fly in claims. How a server distributes them tells you most of
what you need to know about it.
The three models
- Purchase only. Ranks exist in the store and nowhere else. Common, and the reason the pay-to-win question exists.
- Playtime ladder. Ranks earned by hours played, votes, or objectives. Fairest, and increasingly common as a parallel track to the store.
- Both. The same ranks reachable either by playing or by paying, with money buying time rather than access. The healthiest model.
The perks that actually matter
- Claim blocks or claim area. Directly affects whether your build is safe.
- Home slots. Quality of life, and the one you will miss most at one home.
- Teleport cooldown and warmup. Affects every session.
- Kits. Usually a daily kit. Fine unless the top kit hands out endgame gear, which flattens progression for everyone.
- Flight. The contentious one. Flight in your own claim is quality of life; flight everywhere changes exploration and combat.
The pay-to-win line, in practice
A store selling cosmetics and convenience is uncontroversial. A store selling claim blocks, gear or economy multipliers is selling advantage. Most servers sit in between, and the honest test is: is anything in the store unobtainable in game? If everything is also earnable, the store sells time. If some things are exclusive, it sells power.
A free rank on join is a useful signal here, because a server confident in its content does not need to gate the
first tier. Our number one at play.talonmc.net grants one with
/freerank and keeps ranks, crates and rewards obtainable in game, with the store selling acceleration
on top rather than anything exclusive.
