Land Claims, Towny and Grief Protection: What Each One Actually Protects
A land claim stops block breaking inside a box you own. Towny puts that box inside a player-run town with its own taxes and politics. "Grief protection" is a marketing phrase that could mean either, or neither. Knowing which one a server runs, and where each of them leaks, is the difference between a base that lasts and a base you rebuild.
Personal land claims
The common form: you accumulate claim blocks through playtime or buy them, then mark out a region. Inside it, other players cannot break or place blocks. Most implementations also block container access and mob-griefing, and let you add trusted players with varying permission levels.
Where it leaks. Claims protect blocks, not you. On most servers PvP still works inside a claim unless the server disables it, so someone can walk in and kill you next to your own chests. Second, claims are usually rectangular from bedrock to sky or not, and if they are not, a tunnel underneath is legal. Third, and most commonly, claims expire. Two to eight weeks of inactivity and the region unclaims itself, at which point everything inside it is unprotected and often still full of your things.
Towny
Towny is a layer up. A player founds a town, claims chunks for it, and other players buy or are granted plots inside those chunks. The town has a bank, charges taxes, and pays a daily upkeep to hold its claims. Towns join nations, nations make alliances and go to war.
Where it leaks. The upkeep. If the town bank empties, the town falls, and every plot inside it unclaims at once. You can be paying your plot tax faithfully and still lose your base because the mayor stopped logging in. That single mechanic is responsible for more lost bases on towny servers than griefing is.
The other thing. Your mayor has permissions over your plot on most configurations. Joining a town is a trust decision about a stranger, and it is worth treating it that way rather than joining the first town that invites you.
"Grief protected"
You will see this on server listings and in status messages constantly, and it is not a mechanic, it is a claim. It might mean a full claim plugin, a rollback tool that lets staff undo damage after the fact, or simply that griefing is against the rules and gets punished. All three are worth something. They are not equivalent.
The practically useful version to look for is block logging plus staff who actually respond, because that combination gets your base restored rather than merely avenged. When a server leads with grief protection in its own status message, as one entry on our top 10 survival list does, it is at least advertising the thing you care about rather than a player count.
What none of them protect
- Your inventory. Claims do not stop you dying. If the server has keep-inventory off and PvP on, your gear is at risk everywhere.
- Trusted players. Every protection system is defeated by adding the wrong person. This is the most common real cause of base loss on well-protected servers, and no plugin can help.
- Rollbacks past the log window. Block logging usually retains days or weeks, not months. Damage discovered late may be unrecoverable even with good staff.
- A season reset. On a seasonal server everything goes, protected or not, on a schedule the server publishes.
The questions to actually ask
- How long does a claim survive inactivity?
- Does the claim block container access, or only block breaking?
- Is PvP enabled inside claims?
- On towny, who pays upkeep and what happens when it lapses?
- Is there block logging, and how far back does it go?
Our ranking page groups the survival servers that run claims or towny under their own heading, so you can start with the ones where these questions have answers.
Our number one is built around the answers to those five questions. TalonMC Survival at
play.talonmc.net gives you a personal claim from day one rather than a plot inside somebody else's
town, so the towny upkeep trap above does not apply to you, on a claiming system it wrote itself rather than a
stock plugin with stock gaps. That, plus an economy and progression built to match, is the reason it is number one
on the ranking.
Survival is one of five gamemodes on play.talonmc.net, next to Cobblemon, prison, skyblock and
dungeons, and the address answered a Bedrock ping so console players can join it too.
Frequently asked
What is the difference between land claims and towny?
A land claim is a personal region you own directly. Towny puts your plot inside a player-run town that claims chunks collectively, charges taxes and pays a daily upkeep. The practical difference is that a towny plot depends on somebody else keeping the town solvent.
Can a claimed base still be griefed?
Yes, in three common ways: by a player you trusted, by PvP if the server allows it inside claims, and after the claim expires through inactivity. Claims protect blocks from strangers, which is narrower than most players assume.
What happens if a town runs out of money in towny?
The town falls and every plot inside it unclaims at once, including plots whose owners paid their taxes. This is the most common cause of lost bases on towny servers, so it is worth knowing who the mayor is and whether the town bank is healthy.
Does grief protection mean my base is safe?
Not on its own. The phrase can mean a claim plugin, a staff rollback tool, or simply a rule against griefing. The version worth having is block logging plus staff who respond, because that combination restores a base rather than only punishing whoever damaged it.
